Burning Minneapolis Issue: Garbage

Hennepin County is seeking approval from City and State environmental authorities to increase its North Loop plant (near Target Field) incineration capacity 11% from its current 365,000 tons annually. The county states that expanded burning offers several benefits, including: reduced land fill dumping (garbage volume is reduced 90% after incineration), increased electricity sales resulting in more dollars for additional recycling and composting programs, and additional pollution control equipment at the North Loop Site.  Opponents argue that the incinerator sends toxins into downtown buildings and that the county should direct efforts toward improving its composting and recycling programs since there is still plenty of recyclable waste going into landfills.
